An Hour Full of Chocolate

By Mike Davis,

Co-Host, The Dale Jr. Download

Over the years an inside joke emerged that wondered exactly how many hunting buddies did Dale Earnhardt have. The humor, of course, was in the fact that for every five Earnhardt stories told, four would seemingly start or end with, "You realize Dale and I hunted together, right? Yeppers, we were best good huntin' buddies, ol' Dale and I."

As we all were. The huntin' club of a million members.

Truth is there are only a handful of people on the planet who truly knew Dale Earnhardt -- his strengths, his flaws, his passions, his moments of sensitivity, his moments of anger, his moments of joy, his Clark Kent side when the cape was off.

Danny "Chocolate" Myers is one of them. He was the gas man and longtime crew member on Earnhardt's No. 3 Richard Childress Racing team. He was an original member of the Junkyard Dogs. His life was intertwined with Earnhardt's for 17 years.

Here's my point. Chocolate just gave us an insightful hour on the Dale Jr. Download podcast today, and just like David Allen, Richard Childress or Michael Waltrip, Chocolate is one of the few people on the planet who undeniably knew Dale Earnhardt. And while there was only one Dale Earnhardt, he impressed upon people many different ways. Everyone has an Earnhardt story that is uniquely their own.

My favorite moments from this episode? Chocolate's recollection of the Earnhardt/Bodine feud, which was every bit as real on the inside as it seemed on the outside. But was there a brief moment in which Earnhardt expressed compassion for Bodine? Or remorse? Chocolate had something to say about that.

There is so much more to this conversation, and we can't wait to bring it to you. Episode 312 of The Dale Jr. Download is coming soon to major podcasting platforms as well as DirtyMoMedia.com.
